Milkweed Project with CCSA First Graders

As a follow-up to the visit last fall from Monarch Butterfly Conservationists, one CCSA volunteer helped to organize a hands-on science activity with our 1st Grade scholars – constructing milkweed greenhouses.

Volunteers are an important and valued part of the CCSA community. Our students benefit from their wisdom and experience, their kindness, and their energy – and our volunteers love to make a difference in their own way to the lives of our wonderful children. Peggy Thompson is one such volunteer that actively connects CCSA curriculum with exciting opportunities for our scholars.

Milkweed Greenhouses

Peggy and members of the Providence Garden Club worked alongside each student to create a ‘greenhouse’ from a plastic gallon jug in which milkweed seeds were planted. Because the cold is necessary for Milkweed seeds to grow, the greenhouses will be kept in Peggy Thompson’s backyard throughout the winter. In the spring, our budding scientists will plant the seeds behind CCSA to build a butterfly garden.

Thanks to all those who made this possible!

A special thank you to the Providence Garden Club for growing our students’ experience and knowledge through such a fun activity! We are also grateful to Wawa for donating 50 plastic gallon jugs to make this project possible.
